Abitare la Barca, in its fifth year, was once again the only “live” nautical design competition in the world; open to students from universities and schools of design, this year’s competition, as in 2010, saw the participation of a British student from the Faculty of Art and Design and Performance, BA Product Design, University of Central Lancashire, put forward by the British Marine Federation. During the first two days of SEATEC 2011, 16 and 17 February, the students competed in a special area set aside for them: “AGORA’ in Hall D, on the reinterpretation of the typical Mediterranean small fishing boat known as a “gozzo”: Theme: Open boats – maximum length 7 metres – primarily with oars with the option of an engine – on board or outboard – and minimum auxiliary sailing equipment, that reinterprets with new ideas the classical features of the Mediterranean shipyard traditional boats, that is the small fishing boats. Their use may range from pleasure fishing to complementary facilities at bathing establishments. Particular attention should be paid to the lightness, versatility, low management costs, safety and reliability that small versatile boats should have. Having read the competition rules, the jury defined the following four criteria for assessing the works which were identified by a number only: - Correspondence to competition rules
- Originality
- Design
- Execution of the table presented.
After much discussion the following three winners were announced with the jury’s reasons for their selection: First Place: GILDO INCITTI – University ROMA 3 – Faculty of Architecture For the project: LIBRA Jury’s reasons: perfect balance between the restrictions imposed by the competition, with significant original solutions and attention to design, all condensed into a table that was very well- executed. Second Place: DANIELE ANDREOTTI – University of Florence, Faculty of Architecture, Masters in Design For the project: OVERTURN Jury’s reasons: correspondence of the project to the competition rules, with a very well-executed table, which well conveyed the high quality of the design as well as its significant originality. Third Place: ALESSANDRO PADULA – IED European Institute of Design, TURIN campus For the project: EXCHANGE Jury’s reasons: excellent presentation which clearly adheres to the competition rules and with a superb balance between originality and design.
