“M.Y.D.A. - Millennium Yacht Design Award”, the international competition for yacht designers, is in its 8th year. The event, promoted and organized by carrarafiere at Seatec, the 9th international exhibition of technologies, subcontracting and design for boats, megayachts and ships, has become a prominent event attended by the most important design and engineering firms.

M.Y.D.A. Award 2011 is divided into two categories:

1. “ESTABLISHED PROFESSIONALS” professional designers that have already designed and built at least one boat.
2. “YOUNG DESIGNERS”  young professionals that have not yet built any boat.

Both categories can enter both sections:

A. New Projects
B. Dream Boats

SECTION A, New Projects: Design as a substantial contribution to the development and innovation of the concept of the pleasure boat. Projects substantially completed, not yet built

SECTION B, Dream Boats: One-off projects, outside the realms of what is currently accepted - complete freedom of expression - a personal conceptual and formal invention. Not an impossible dream, rather a daring vision for the future.

The prize-giving ceremony was held on February 16th after the conference “Maximum length 10 metres: How to identify the points that can distinguish design from mere style today, making small leisure boats attractive once more.

The Jury, chaired by Decio G. R. Carugati, and including Valerio Cometti, Elena Lenzi, Roberto Franzoni, Roberto Piatti, Andrea Ratti, Ivan Zignego, Giovanni Zuccon announced the winners.

Professionals: Winner Section A, New Projects:

Federico RACCOLTI, Alessandro Toni GRECO, Diego BRONDI
for the project: Natante a motore 4.20 (motor boat 4.20) with the following reasons: Innovative new reading of a boat showing the ability to offer a new versatile use of a small-sized boat. An effective up-to-date style innovating an item of mass production.

Winner Section B, Dream Boat: The jury abstained from awarding any prizes in this section.

Young Designers: Winner Section A, New Projects

Juri KARINEN (Lathi, Finland) for the project: Tofi 12 mt. with the following reasons: A complete and mature project that finds a balanced solution to compositional and technological aspects with careful attention to sustainability.

Special Mentions:

Alessandro Christian MOLINO e Massimo BRIZZI for the project: RIB 43’ with the following reasons: Within the inflatable boats segment the project proposes interesting solutions with particular attention to use by users with different capabilities.

Winner Section B, Dream Boat

Hyun-Seok Kim (Corea) for the project: Tofi 12 mt. with the following reasons: Brave interpretative exploration of the motor boat concept that borrows references from areas totally new to the nautical world.

Special Mentions:

Paolo Giordano for the project: 60’ Vela (60’ sail) with the following reasons: The non-conventional layout of the compositive features of a sailing boat that proposes an unusual solution for the crew.

Fiorella FINO and Luigi LOCURATOLO for the project: Catamarano Vela (sailing catamaran) with the following reasons: A complete, well-illustrated project that proposes a clear and essential shape for a sailing catamaran.
