Speaker: Dipl. Ing. Christof Neidhart, Testo AG Abstract: Nowadays, environmental considerations and control of exhaust gas emissions has become a very important issue for the Marine industry. Therefore, the monitoring of gaseous emissions from Marine Diesel engines has practically become mandatory. For this reason it is necessary to develop techniques for direct and reliable measurement of emissions, with the least possible cost. The main interest is focused on CO2 and NOx emissions. CO2 emissions are directly related to the engine fuel consumption, while NOx is directly related to the combustion mechanism and the operating condition of the engine. The guidelines followed for gaseous emissions measurements are foreseen in MARPOL Annex VI. However, the application of existing conventional techniques is problematic, due to several drawbacks (i.e. high cost, extremely bulky equipment, installation problems etc.). For this reason, in the present work an alternative approach is presented to overcome the drawbacks of conventional methodologies. The methodology is based on the use of a portable exhaust gas analyzer the TESTO 350-MARITIME which is certified for this type of measurement and analysis of measured engine data. Using this approach it is possible to measure, process and evaluate gaseous emissions of Marine diesel engines. A significant advantage of the specific approach is that the results obtained are provided in g/kWh which allows a direct comparison to the limits of MARPOL guidelines. The consequences of this can compromise correct CE marking, with serious effects and real risks for the continuity of business for both builders and their suppliers in the marine supply and production chain.
